Chraracter design
in September 2008 we attack in a Small committee the graphics research of the characters from Cinderella, Rémy Wyart, Creteur Dan and myself put on paper the first sketches. Pascal Herold director wanted to get away from the usual cartoon visuals and try and reach a more adult target. he wanted the humanoid body (future technical requirements of the motion capture) with animal heads moving towards realism.
We first worked on the main character of Cinderella. when the impala arrived he immediately seduced Pascal Herold. What allowed to make variations of the other characters starting from this base.

The Prince

Chraracter design
the character of the villain is often the most interesting in the movies. Barbazul was to be a wicked nice. he was at once able to scare his broken arms team of pirates but both eventually show great humanity and sympatie.

The Bad
Chraracter design
A difficult character to get, it should be both attractive, give a feeling of being ingenuous with a nonchalant nobility.
He had to have both a late 18 th century look of the Russian bourgeoisie while that may belong to the western world.

The Pirates
Chraracter design
This character is personally one of my favorite, the real villain and stupid just ugly.
The director wished that these hackers are mixing with south american influences and so we left on mexican pirates. personally I slipped some stripes on costumes; a little wink at Dalton.

Color Script In the second time I was able to help the director in making thumbnails of color script on certain passages of the film, especially during the final sequence where the atmosphere was changing gradually...

Matte Painting |

A shape library we had neither the time nor the budget to afford us to create mattepaintings for each sequences of the movie.
So we made the choice to use the "bricks" of decoration to create the environements at the time of assembly of the 3D layout.

Once established the universe and approved by the director. I made a pass on all major scenery in order to unify the whole. We first perform low 3D models definitions of all the sets to determine the final proportions.
This step of course serve the layout but will also serve as my working base for the artistic direction.

Character Surfacing
Once completed graphic design, I put my textures supervisor cap. while the Belgian teams were involved in making the decorations from our side we dealt within Delacave studio to make the characters.
The challenge was to achieve to get the result desired in the technical constraints; which renderer is a harware engine, very close from those of the real-time.
I present here a few characters I was able to make the shading and texturing ...

I realized at first a bank of sketches for different pieces of the "puzzle" of sets in 2D. these elements should be both neutral and both characterized to accommodate for the different locations. Secondly I then took the responsibility to achieve them in 3D Cameramapping.
